The most important factor in a dashboard camera’s video quality is video resolution. Lower-end models will record using low resolution, but for decent video quality you’ll want a minimum of 720p which is high-definition. For the best video, look for camera systems which shoot in 1080p or higher.

Consider this a must-have feature for any DashCam. Loop Recording means the camera will continue to record even when its memory is full. New video will be recorded over the oldest video saved on your camera. This essentially allows for indefinite recording. Keep in mind, any video which is recorded over is lost with a loop recording system, however to prevent this from happening look for a DashCam with File Lock.

The ability to grab good quality video footage at night is what separates the great camera models from the average. This is not traditional night video, but real-time, real-lighting recording. Lower-end models will look muddy at night, while others will have LEDs to illuminate the scene. But these LED systems on DashCams will cause reflections in the windshield and essentially blind the camera. Any DashCam or GoPro with 1080p resolution (or higher) will typically also feature great nighttime video capabilities.

This sensor, also sometimes referred to as a motion sensor, will automatically begin recording the moment it senses an impact. Cameras with G-Sensors will also tag the footage and protect it from being recorded over by loop recording.

Many camera systems come mounted with a screen for immediate video playback. While this is a convenient feature, it also causes the camera system to be larger than usual. For a GoPro, this will slightly hinder the versatility of the camera. On a DashCam, it will make your camera less discreet.
